“Majestic” is the word that springs to mind as you approach St. Nicholas Cathedral. This Russian Orthodox Cathedral stands as a testament to faith and history right here in New York City.

St. Nicholas Cathedral’s story began in the early 1890s. Orthodox believers gathered in rented rooms in lower Manhattan. Their community grew quickly. By 1899, about 300 parishioners sought a larger, more permanent home.

They found a spot uptown on East 97th Street. Even Tsar Nicholas II contributed to its construction with 7500 rubles. Bishop Tikhon laid the cornerstone in 1901. He would later become the Patriarch of Moscow.

John Bergesen designed St. Nicholas Cathedral in a traditional Russian style. Its stone structure features a dark red brick facade. Limestone trim and glazed tiles add color. Seven onion-shaped domes rise above. Gilt bronze ribs accent the green iron domes.

Completed in 1904, St. Nicholas Cathedral became the seat of the Diocese of the Aleutians and North America in 1905. The headquarters moved from San Francisco to New York. Fr. Alexander Hotovitzky served as pastor until 1914.

The Russian Revolution brought challenges. Soviet-controlled elements contested the diocese’s independence. A New York court awarded ownership to the Living Church in Russia. For decades St. Nicholas Cathedral functioned uneasily under an atheistic regime.

The fall of the Soviet Union changed everything. Control of St. Nicholas Cathedral returned to the freed Church of Russia. Patriarch Alexei II oversaw the transfer. Today, St. Nicholas Cathedral is the seat of the Administrator of Patriarchal Parishes in the USA.

In 1973, the Architectural Society of New York City recognized the building’s unique beauty. They placed a bronze plaque celebrating its contribution to city architecture.

Extensive renovations occurred around the year 2000. Reconstruction of the Cathedral’s art mirrored work in Moscow’s Church of Christ the Savior. This ensured an authentic restoration.

The traditional arrangement of images was selected. An image of Christ the Pantokrator crowns the dome. Gospel scenes and images from the life of St. Nicholas adorn the walls.

Today, St. Nicholas Cathedral continues its mission. It serves as a center for Russian Orthodoxy in the United States. The Representation of the Moscow Patriarchate is located here. The Cathedral promotes Orthodox unity and engages with other faiths and organizations.

St. Nicholas Cathedral stands not for human glory. It stands for the glory of God. May this stronghold of Russian Orthodoxy guide many to His Kingdom. Remember those who served here and may God grant them eternal life.
