In the heart of Detroit, the Russell Woods Church of Christ stands as a beacon of faith. It has served the community for decades. Russell Woods Church of Christ started as a vision of Brother Ellis J. Bonner in the early 1960s. He recognized a need for a Church of Christ on Detroit’s northwest side. At the time, only five African American churches of Christ existed in the city. Brother Bonner saw the shifting demographics. He understood the need for a new spiritual home in the Russell Woods neighborhood. In 1962, the first gathering of the Russell Woods congregation took place. Guided by Brother Alonzo Carter and Brethren Coy Burgess, Grandville Holt, and Scott French, the small group met at the Fisher YMCA. Located at the corner of West Grand Boulevard and Dexter Avenue, the YMCA served as their temporary sanctuary. Around fifteen to twenty members attended these early meetings. Today, Russell Woods Church of Christ resides at 11417 Broadstreet Avenue. The church is a welcoming place for both Christians and those curious about Christianity. They strive to connect with others and encourage them to join their faith journey. The church emphasizes learning and understanding the Bible. They follow the teachings of Jesus and his followers. Their vision is to make a positive impact in Detroit by sharing the message of eternal hope through Jesus Christ. Russell Woods Church of Christ invites everyone to join them. They welcome newcomers to get to know the community better.
