Remember Vine Park? That’s what many in the Cole neighborhood call Russell Square Park. For years, this park sat underutilized. But now Russell Square Park has been reborn.
Let’s dive into the story of Russell Square Park. It’s a story of community, collaboration, and reconnection with nature. The makeover of Russell Square Park started with a vision in 2015. My Outdoor Colorado engaged the Cole community. They wanted to know what the community desired in a park improvement project.
The Trust for Public Land and Denver Parks & Recreation formed a coalition. Their theme was “nature play”. For four years, they gathered community feedback. They held family and youth workshops. Leaders from the Cole Boys & Girls Club and cityWILD youth also participated.
In 2019, the Russell Square Park project moved forward. The design was complete in 2021. Construction began in early 2022. The total cost reached $1.25 million. Funding came from GOCO, DPR Legacy Funds, and DPR Capital Funds.
The renovations at Russell Square Park are impressive. There is an expanded nature-based playground. A small water feature was added. Picnic areas were updated. An outdoor classroom amphitheater was built. There is also a multi-use court. A community mural adorns the multi-use court. Local artist Lauri Keener led the effort. She worked with the Youth Advisory Council.
These improvements to Russell Square Park reflect community priorities. The goal was to create an active destination. A place where children and residents can reconnect with nature. The new amenities are nestled beneath mature trees. These trees create a welcoming space for daily activities.
Russell Square Park is more than just a park. It’s a testament to what a community can achieve when they work together. It shows how a park can become a vital part of neighborhood life.
