High above the Main River stands Rumpenheimer Schloss a majestic testament to centuries past. Its story begins not with kings and queens but with Johann Georg Seifert von Edelsheim a shrewd politician serving the County of Hanau. In 1674 he received Rumpenheim as a fiefdom for his financial services to the Count. He built a manor house the core of the present-day Rumpenheimer Schloss.

This wasn’t just any manor house. It was a strategic move. Rumpenheim’s location on the Main River was key. Seifert cleverly expanded his holdings adding land around the manor house creating the beautiful park we see today. He transformed a simple manor into a significant property.

The story takes a royal turn in 1768. The Seifert family sold the manor house to Prince Charles of Hesse-Kassel. The County of Hanau had been annexed to the Electorate of Hesse in 1736. This acquisition elevated Rumpenheim’s status. Prince Charles’s brother Frederick later purchased Rumpenheimer Schloss. He expanded the manor into the three-winged palace we partially see today.

Throughout the 19th century Rumpenheimer Schloss became a hotspot for European royalty. Imagine the summer gatherings. Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge and her family were frequent visitors. So were Princess Louise of Hesse-Kassel queen consort of Denmark and her family. Even Queen Mary of England and King Edward VII graced Rumpenheim with their presence before their coronations. They weren’t just visitors though. In 1863 Prince William of Schleswig-Holstein-Glücksburg received the Greek crown at Rumpenheimer Schloss. He departed from the Schloss to claim his new kingdom.

Sadly war struck. Bombing during World War II severely damaged Rumpenheimer Schloss. It fell into ruin and abandonment. Offenbach am Main acquired it in 1965. The town gradually restored the Schloss. Today luxury apartments occupy this once grand palace. The Rumpenheimer Schloss is an extraordinary blend of history and modern living. Its stones still whisper tales of royalty intrigue and resilience.
