Can you imagine the stories woven within the crumbling stones of Ruine Winneburg? You are standing right in front of it, gazing at the imposing remains of a medieval castle perched high above the Endert Valley. Ruine Winneburg offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Cochem’s past. Built in the 13th century, this once mighty fortress witnessed the rise and fall of noble families. The Winneburgs were the original owners, their lineage fading away in 1637. Around the middle of the 17th century, the castle passed into the hands of the Metternich family. The castle was blown up by the French in 1689, but remnants of the gate porch and the front courtyard still stand. You can also admire the round keep and two half-towers that include the almost 20-meter long great hall. Today the castle is a gift from the town of Cochem, a testament to its history and the legacy of the Winneburg family.
