Journey with me back 300 million years. The Ruhr Museum isn’t just a building; it’s a time capsule. This museum stands as a memory and a showcase of the Ruhr area. It documents nature, culture, and the history of Europe’s largest urban area.

The Ruhr Museum resides in the former coal washing plant of the Zeche Zollverein colliery. This was once the most modern and productive coal mine globally. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 2001 after its closure. The building itself is spectacular in size and architecture.

HG Merz, an architect from Stuttgart, designed the exhibition. It integrates the exhibition’s contents into the building’s existing structure. The design combines natural and cultural history. It showcases the entire history of the Ruhr area. It takes you from the formation of coal to the current changes toward the Ruhr Metropolis. The categories Present, Memory, and History are assigned to three exhibition levels.

Visitors journey from top to bottom. They descend from the present to the history of the region, following the path once taken by coal. The journey starts in the present. The Ruhr area needs explanation to visitors. It lacks natural or political borders and isn’t a natural landscape.

The 17-meter level shows images and views of the Ruhr area. Here are myths, stereotypes, modern-day phenomena, and underlying structures. It addresses the experiences of the people of the Ruhr area. It recounts millions of years of geology.

The 12-meter level is dedicated to the pre-industrial history of the Ruhr area. This level once stored rocks, water, and coal. The windowless storehouses symbolize the region’s pre-modern cultural memory. The exhibition displays artifacts from major museums and private lenders. These cultural goods from pre-industrial eras define the identity of the Ruhr area. Geological, archaeological, and ethnological artifacts represent the museum’s oldest collections.

The history of the Ruhr area starts with industrialization 200 years ago. The Ruhr Museum displays this transformation on the 6-meter level. A geological prologue about coal formation is followed by industrialization. You will witness advancements in ore smelting and the destruction of two world wars. The epilogue looks to the future as fossil fuel consumption ends.

The Ruhr Museum has important geological, archaeological, ethnological, and natural history collections. These collections have been enhanced for over a hundred years. New priorities focus on the social history of the Ruhr area during industrialization. The photo archive contains over four million photographs.

The Ruhr Museum also has external locations. The Mineralien-Museum houses mineralogical and geological collections. The Deilbach Valley combines geology with industrial monuments. The geological trail at Lake Baldeney includes geological outcroppings.

The Ruhr Museum offers multilingual guides. They also have an educational program with thematic tours and activities. The Ruhr Museum presents exhibitions on national topics. Together with the Portal of Industrial Heritage and the viewing platform, a visit is a unique experience.

So, as you explore the Ruhr Museum, remember that you’re not just walking through a museum. You are traversing time, witnessing the layers of history, industry, and culture that have shaped this incredible region.
