Beneath the Essen sky stands the Ruhestätte der Familie Krupp. A family resting place. It whispers tales of steel magnates and industrial giants. The Krupp family. A name synonymous with German industry for centuries.

This secluded spot wasn’t always here. The Krupp family’s graves were once located near Essen’s main train station. But urban development forced a relocation. In 1955 the family’s resting place moved to Bredeney. A more peaceful suburban setting. Closer to the family’s Villa Hügel.

The transfer was meticulously documented. Krupp executives oversaw the exhumation and reburial. Each coffin carefully moved. Each tombstone carefully placed. A testament to the family’s wealth and influence. Even in death. The Krupp family demanded respect.

The new site is more than just graves. It’s a family mausoleum. A private cemetery. It houses the remains of key figures in the Krupp dynasty. Friedrich Krupp the founder. His son Alfred who built the steel empire. Alfred’s son Friedrich Alfred and his wife Margarethe. Bertha and Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach. Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach the last family member to head the firm. Even Berthold Beitz the long-time head of the Krupp Foundation is buried nearby. His wife joined him later.

Sculptor Otto Lang created some of the most prominent monuments. Alfred Krupp’s is a striking black sarcophagus. It features two bronze sculptures. Friedrich Alfred’s is an apotheosis. A bronze eagle its wings spread wide. A symbol of the Krupp family’s ambition and power.

The Ruhestätte der Familie Krupp is more than just a resting place. It’s a tangible link to a powerful family. A family whose impact on Essen and Germany is undeniable. Their legacy lives on in the steel that built the nation. In the very ground beneath our feet. A legacy forever etched in the stones of this secluded and impressive family cemetery.
