“This country is vast,” King Cyilima I Rugwe supposedly proclaimed, gazing out over the rolling hills. He stood atop a hill, looking at the territory he had just conquered. That territory, centuries later, would become a sector of Rwanda’s Southern Province, the Rugalika sector.
Rugalika, a name derived from Rugwe’s declaration, is one of the twelve sectors that make up the Kamonyi District. This district, located in the Southern Province, holds a special place in Rwanda’s administrative landscape. Rugalika, itself, is a quiet sector, primarily rural, where life revolves around the rhythms of agriculture. It sits about 15 kilometers from the bustling capital city of Kigali, a stark contrast to the tranquility of Rugalika.
