“Ever wonder who this street is named after?” I ask pointing to the street sign of Rue Théodore Bekaert – Théodore Bekaertstraat. This street commemorates a man of significant importance in Belgian socialist history. Théodore Bekaert was not just a name. He was a driving force in the late 19th-century labor movement.

Rue Théodore Bekaert – Théodore Bekaertstraat is more than just an address. It is a tribute to a man who dedicated his life to workers’ rights. Bekaert’s story is one of activism, dedication and untimely death. He left a lasting impact on Anderlecht and beyond.

Théodore Bekaert was born in Ghent in 1852. He was an accomplished mechanical worker. His true calling, however, lay in advocating for the working class. Bekaert became deeply involved in the burgeoning socialist movement.

In 1885, Bekaert played a key role in founding the Parti Ouvrier Belge (POB). This was a pivotal moment for organized labor in Belgium. He documented the first congress of Belgian metallurgists in 1886. In 1887, he co-founded the Syndicat des Tourneurs-Raboteurs de Bruxelles. This further solidified his commitment to the metalworkers’ cause.

Bekaert’s influence grew within the POB. At the 1889 congress, he represented the Ligue Ouvrière de Cureghem-Anderlecht. By 1893, he advocated for a permanent secretary-treasurer for the POB. This showed his dedication to strengthening the party’s organizational structure.

In June 1898, Bekaert became secretary of the Fédération Nationale des Métallurgistes. This appointment recognized his unwavering commitment to the metalworkers. His predecessor, Évariste Pierron, could not fully dedicate himself to the role. Bekaert stepped in. He was ready to serve the workers full-time.

Bekaert also entered local politics. He was elected as a socialist municipal councilor in Cureghem, Anderlecht. This was during the 1884 elections. He later became alderman for public welfare and civil status in 1895.

Tragically, Théodore Bekaert’s life was cut short. While addressing striking workers at a zinc factory in Prayon-Trooz, he died suddenly on November 17, 1898. His death was a blow to the socialist movement. Guillaume Solau succeeded him as secretary.

Rue Théodore Bekaert – Théodore Bekaertstraat stands as a reminder of his contributions. It is a tribute to a man who fought tirelessly for the rights of workers. Next time you pass this street remember Théodore Bekaert. Think about his dedication. Think about his commitment to social justice.
