Is it possible for a street to echo with the whispers of transformation? Rue Saint-Gabriel offers such a story. This street in Lille has seen changes. It connects the past with the present.

Rue Saint-Gabriel got its name in 1853. It sits on the historic path of La Louvière. This path once stretched between Rue des Guinguettes, now Rue Eugène Jacquet and the road to Roubaix now Rue du Faubourg-de-Roubaix.

Let’s turn toward the corner of Avenue des Lilas. You will see the Ozanam institution in the street. It stands as a testament to time. Once, at number 40, “Au Grand Bon Marché” sold hats. It also offered an apartment for rent on the first floor. The hat shop is gone. Now, a flower shop blooms in its place.

Rue Saint-Gabriel is within the Saint-Maurice Pellevoisin district. This area has a rich history. Saint-Maurice was once part of Fives until 1858. It was known as the Faubourg de Roubaix. This area sat on an old road from Lille to Roubaix. This road is still the CD14 today.

In the 19th and 20th centuries Saint-Maurice Pellevoisin was industrial. There were breweries, a malt house, and textile factories. Today, it is mostly residential. The street holds pieces of this history.

Looking at the architecture, you can see how times have changed. A modern building stands at 47-49 Rue Saint-Gabriel. Built in 2018, this building has apartments. Logis Métropole and CBAU architects created it. It has three floors. The building is 12.09 meters tall. It has a floor area of 511 square meters. The land it sits on is 389 square meters.

Many religious buildings are in this district. There is the Buissonnets retirement home and the Saint-Esprit congregation. You will also find the Dominican Convent and schools.

At the corner of Rue du Faubourg de Roubaix and Rue Saint-Gabriel stood an estaminet. It was called “Le Chevalier Français”. This was a popular spot long ago.

In 2015, a collaborative platform for arts companies was founded near Rue Saint-Gabriel. It is at 188 Rue du Faubourg de Roubaix. It is called “le 188”.

Rue Saint-Gabriel is more than just a street. It is a place where different eras meet. Buildings rise. Businesses change. The street holds the stories of Lille. It invites us to remember the past. It embraces the present. It anticipates the future.
