Why name a street after a siege? Rue Renan carries a weighty history. It speaks of resilience and remembrance. This street in Lille echoes with tales of courage against adversity.

Rue Renan wasn’t always its current name. It was once known as Rue de Bourbon. This honored Henri de Bourbon, an abbot of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. The street’s initial creation dates back to around 1640. It was built on the Pré-aux-Clercs grassland.

In 1704 a council ruling aimed to extend Rue de Bourbon. The plan involved connecting it to the newly opened Rue de Bourgogne. However a letter patent in 1719 proposed further extension. This extension was intended to reach the rampart but it never materialized.

Then came the French Revolution and everything changed. On October 27 1792 the commune’s general council decided on a new name. Rue de Bourbon was to be renamed Rue de Lille. This commemorated the heroic defense of Lille against the Austrian army during the 1792 siege.

The story doesn’t end there. In 1815 the Restoration briefly brought back the name Rue de Bourbon. However the July Revolution of 1830 permanently restored it to Rue de Lille. The name stuck as a reminder of Lille’s brave stand.

Today Rue Renan is more than just a name. It is a bustling part of Lille. It is a vital artery connecting different parts of the city. You can hop on the bus lines 14 15 or 18 to get here. Metro lines M1 and M2 also provide convenient access.
