Gazing at Rue Philippe Lebon, imagine a time before electric lights. Here, in the heart of Lille’s old Latin Quarter, the very air crackles with the spirit of innovation. Rue Philippe Lebon isn’t just a street. It’s a tribute to the man who illuminated our world, Philippe Lebon, the inventor of gas lighting and a pioneer of the internal combustion engine. The square bearing his name, established in 1863 and officially named in 1867, is a testament to his ingenuity. This circular space embodies “modern Lille”. It became a model for urban development after the city’s seventh expansion in 1858. Rue Philippe Lebon truly came to life between 1868 and 1899. During this time, the Saint-Michel church was built and the Pasteur monument was inaugurated. The square encapsulates ideal urban planning. You can see homogenous houses with subtle ornamentation, straight, well-maintained streets, and the monumental statue at the roundabout. The Romano-Byzantine Saint-Michel Church also graces the square. Interestingly, the Faculty of Sciences, although not readily visible from the street today, was also a prominent feature of Rue Philippe Lebon. This area nurtured the University of Lille’s faculties of Chemistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Literature, and Law from 1896 until the mid-1970s. Even today, Sciences Po Lille and its library maintain the student spirit in the neighborhood. Rue Philippe Lebon is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to the transformative power of science and progress.
