Rue Montagne du Parc – Warandeberg

“Imagine the year 1776” Architect B Guimard designed this area. He transformed the gardens of the Coudenberg Palace into the elegant Rue Montagne du Parc. This street is part of the Parc quarter a beautiful classical ensemble. Originally Rue Montagne du Parc connected to the old Rue du Parchemin. This led to the lower city. The area was once the Saint-Martin cemetery. In 1620 it was given to the Parc Abbey refuge. The refuge had been on Rue de la Chancellerie for a long time. Guimard widened the old alley. He extended it to the park. He created symmetrical classical houses. Initially there were corner pavilions near the park. Number 7 housed the Petit Béguinage with its pilastered facade. The Parc and Averbode Abbey refuges were built in 1778-1781. They had low avant-corps with balustrades and pediments. After 1911 Rue Montagne du Parc was extended to the Marché au Bois crossroads. A monumental bank building was constructed on the north side. A square was built on the south side. During the reconstruction of the Société Générale de Belgique in 1968-1980 Rue Montagne du Parc became a narrow passage with stairs. Today Rue Montagne du Parc stands as a testament to Brussels’ rich history. It is a blend of past and present a beautiful street with a fascinating story.
