In 1889 Leon Crepy-Flament had a vision. He purchased land near Lomme and Lambersart. He wanted to build a cotton mill. This was the beginning of Rue Leon Crepy. To serve his factory he built new roads. Rue Vaillant Rue Flament-Reboux Rue Ampere and Rue Lavoisier were created.

Rue Leon Crepy is more than just a street. It’s a testament to industrial ambition. Nearly 400 workers were employed at the Crepy mill. This number reached 2500 in the 1950s. Leon Crepy was a paternalistic boss. He built housing for his workers. He even created a medical dispensary which still stands today.

The mill suffered great damage during the German occupations. It was rebuilt and expanded after each conflict. This was thanks to war reparations. However the company’s activity declined in the early 1960s. It finally closed in 1964.

From 1965 some buildings were demolished. Others were converted into housing. The main building was bought by the administration. It housed URSAAF offices from 1967 to 2010. Today these offices are lofts.

Rue Leon Crepy’s story is one of industry resilience and transformation. It’s a place where you can still sense the echoes of thousands of workers. It also shows how a site can reinvent itself. It is a place that reflects the history of Lille itself. It is a street with a past a present and a future.
