Hidden within Anderlecht, a dynamic and diverse commune of Brussels, lies the Rue Jules Ruhl – Jules Ruhlstraat. This seemingly unassuming street holds a fascinating story, deeply intertwined with the history of animal welfare in Belgium. Rue Jules Ruhl isn’t just a street; it’s a tribute to a remarkable man. Jules Ruhl, a doctor of science and a passionate advocate for animals, dedicated his life to their well-being. In 1897, he founded the Brussels Society Against Cruelty to Animals. This was just the beginning of his tireless efforts. In 1908, Ruhl established Veeweyde, Belgium’s first shelter for lost and abandoned animals. Imagine the countless creatures who found refuge and care thanks to his vision. Rue Jules Ruhl is located near the bustling Quai de l’Industrie – Nijverheidskaai, Rue Ropsy Chaudron – Ropsy Chaudronstraat, and Rue Léon Delacroix – Léon Delacroixstraat. The area is well-served by public transportation. A short walk from Rue Jules Ruhl brings you to the tranquil Parc Astrid, a welcome green space in the urban landscape. But Ruhl’s contributions extended beyond shelters. He championed Belgium’s first animal protection law, implemented in 1929. This law was a landmark achievement. It reflected Ruhl’s commitment to creating a more humane society. He even invented a humane pistol for livestock slaughter. He advocated for the use of anesthetics and humane killers in slaughterhouses. He also sought to improve working conditions within these often-grim establishments. Tragically, Ruhl’s life was cut short in 1936 in a heartbreaking accident at the Gare du Midi involving the transportation of horses to Paris. His legacy, however, lives on. A statue in Astridplein honors his work, and the street that bears his name ensures that his dedication to animal welfare is never forgotten. Rue Jules Ruhl – Jules Ruhlstraat stands as a quiet testament to a man who spoke for those who could not speak for themselves.
