“Jules Guesde a name whispered on the wind” Rue Jules Guesde in Lille breathes history. It’s a street steeped in the echoes of revolution and daily life. Opened in 1838 it was initially called Rue Merlin. This was after one of the landowners who were allowed to build houses there. Building near the cemetery was previously forbidden.

The name changed to Rue de Juliers. This is a reference to a Napoleonic battle in Prussia. Locals however shortened it to Rue de Juillet. This was in memory of the 1830 July Revolution. The mayor of Wazemmes approved this name change in 1848. Finally in 1923 the street received its current name. This honors Jules Guesde a prominent socialist politician. He was born in Paris in 1845. He founded a Marxist workers’ party in 1879. He even served as a minister in 1914. He became the first socialist deputy of the Nord department.

Imagine the street in 1936. 243 houses stood along Rue Jules Guesde. Only four were private residences. The rest were bustling shops. 35 taverns thrived alongside seven grocery stores. Ten vegetable vendors sold their produce. Nine butchers shops competed for customers. Five bakeries and pastry shops offered sweet treats. Six creameries and poultry shops supplied dairy and meat. You could find a herbalist a pharmacist two jewelers and watchmakers. Two shoe repair shops a tailor and a music store also stood here. Four hairdressers catered to the locals. Two bicycle shops were here and three soldering businesses. Seven clothing makers worked here too. This included work clothes. Three haberdasheries two lingerie shops one hosiery shop a shoemaker a grain and fodder merchant a knife sharpener and two shoe manufacturers also opened their doors. A photographer captured memories. A toy store delighted children. A watchmaker ensured timekeeping. A bookstore offered knowledge. Two interior decorators added beauty to homes. A printer spread information and a bazaar offered variety. A furniture shop completed this rich tapestry of commercial activities.

A school was built in 1868 on the corner of Rue d’Iena. This school for boys was later transferred to the Salengro school complex in 1958. The building itself remained until the early 1980s. It was then replaced by housing.
