A hush falls over our group as we stand before Rue Georges Mandel. This Lille street carries the weight of a man who defied tyranny. Georges Mandel, born Louis-Georges Rothschild, began his political career at the young age of 21. He served on the personal staff of French Premier Georges Clemenceau. Later, Mandel served in the National Assembly.

Rue Georges Mandel reminds us of Mandel’s unwavering stance against Nazi Germany. In 1940, as a member of Paul Reynaud’s government, he vehemently opposed any armistice with the invaders. He believed the fight must continue, even from France’s African colonies. Following Reynaud’s resignation and the establishment of the Vichy government, Mandel sailed to Morocco. He was arrested there, sent back to France, and imprisoned. The Germans then took custody of him, sending him to concentration camps in Oranienburg and Buchenwald.

On July 4, 1944, just days before his life was tragically cut short, Mandel was brought back to Paris as a hostage. During a prison transfer, the Milice, a French paramilitary force collaborating with the Nazis, captured him. Three days later, they executed him in the Forest of Fontainebleau. His final words, spoken as the German SS handed him over to the Milice, resonate powerfully: “To die is nothing. What is sad is to die without seeing the liberation of the country and the restoration of the Republic.” Georges Mandel’s legacy lives on here, on Rue Georges Mandel, a testament to his courage and unwavering patriotism.
