Ever wondered who this street is named after? Rue Ernest Loyer is a tribute to a man who left his mark on Lille. Let’s delve into the story of Ernest Loyer.

Ernest Loyer was more than just a name. He was a key figure in the Lille area. Born in Wazemmes in 1844, Ernest Loyer was a true local. He died in Lille in 1902.

Loyer’s father, Henry Loyer, established a thread-spinning business in 1842. Henry also served as deputy mayor of Wazemmes. He even presided over the cotton spinners’ union of the Nord. It was a family deeply rooted in local industry and governance.

Ernest Loyer himself was no stranger to public service. He participated in the war of 1870 as a lieutenant. After his father’s death in 1878, he took over the family business. This showed his commitment to both his family and the local economy.

Ernest Loyer became the mayor of Lomme in 1896. He also served as district councillor for the southwest canton of the Nord prefecture from 1892 to 1898. His dedication led to his election as a deputy for the Nord in 1893. He represented the second district of Lille. He secured re-election in 1898.

Loyer’s political affiliation was with the Action libérale party. This party represented Catholics who supported the Republic. He stood for unity.

Even during his political career, Ernest Loyer remained connected to his business. He continued to manage his company. He even won a Grand Prix at the Lyon exhibition for his cotton threads. This was a testament to his entrepreneurial skills.

Loyer was also involved in social causes. He was on the board of directors for the disabled workers. He served as secretary of the war invalids organization. He cared about the well-being of his community.

Sadly, Ernest Loyer passed away in 1902 during his term. Pierre Lorthiois replaced him in the Chamber. Though his life was cut short at 57, his contributions were significant.

Today, Rue Ernest Loyer stands as a reminder of his contributions. It is a tribute to a man who served his community in many roles. He was a businessman, a politician, and a social advocate. So, as you walk along Rue Ernest Loyer remember the legacy of a dedicated public servant. His name is forever etched in the history of Lille.
