In the heart of Lille, the Rue du Sec Arembault beckons. This pedestrian street pulsates with life. It’s a far cry from its medieval origins. Rue du Sec Arembault connects Rue de Béthune to Parvis Saint-Maurice. The street’s name, roughly translated, is “Secretary Arembault Street.” Its true origin remains shrouded in mystery. Several variations have appeared throughout history: Saint-Carembault, Segar Rabault, and Segard-Raimbaut. One theory links the name to Carembault, a district near Phalempin, south of Lille. Rue du Sec Arembault, via Rue de Béthune and Rue Gambetta, points towards this area. However, the connection remains uncertain. Originally within the 13th-century city walls, Rue du Sec Arembault likely existed during the Middle Ages. Before Lille’s expansion in 1604, it ended at the city ramparts near the Tour du Fouan. The expansion extended the street through Rue Notre-Dame, now Rue de Béthune. Once a narrow, irregular lane, Rue du Sec Arembault underwent a transformation in 1886. It was widened and lined with Haussmannian buildings, giving it the grand, uniform appearance we see today. Now a bustling commercial center, the four-story buildings that line the Rue du Sec Arembault house shops and businesses. Two shopping arcades intersect the street. One starts from the former headquarters of the Voix du Nord newspaper at Place du Général-de-Gaulle and extends past Rue Saint-Nicolas. The other, Passage des Tanneurs, cuts through the block between Rue des Tanneurs and Rue Pierre-Mauroy, occupying the site of the former Couvent des Pauvres Claires. These arcades face each other across Rue du Sec Arembault, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. The Rue du Sec Arembault stands as a testament to Lille’s evolving history. From its medieval beginnings to its modern incarnation, it has remained a vital artery in the city’s heart.
