“A boatman’s song echoes in the mists of time,” the old woman said, her voice raspy like dry leaves skittering across cobblestones. We stand here, before Rue des Bateliers, and I can almost hear it too. Rue des Bateliers. It translates to “Street of the Boatmen.” A fitting name, wouldn’t you agree? This street whispers tales of a Lille long past, a Lille intertwined with the Deûle River. Rue des Bateliers wasn’t always the street you see today. Imagine, if you will, a bustling waterway where the Avenue du Peuple Belge now stands. This was the Basse Deûle, a vital port for the city. Rue des Bateliers served as the main artery to this crucial hub, a pathway teeming with boatmen ferrying goods and people. The very name, Rue des Bateliers, anchors this street to its watery past. Its history stretches back to the 17th century, when Vauban, the great military engineer, expanded Lille’s fortifications. The section of Rue des Bateliers, from Avenue du Peuple Belge up to Rue Paul-Ramadier, follows the outline of the old Bastion de La Madeleine. It originally ended at the city walls, a quiet cul-de-sac. Imagine the change in 1950, when the walls came down and the street extended, finally meeting the also-extended Rue du Pont-Neuf. The Basse Deûle, sadly, is no more. Over time, sections were filled in, transformed into covered sewers, a necessary measure for public health. The last vestige, in front of what is now the IAE Lille – School of Management, disappeared in 1953. Yet, here we are on Rue des Bateliers, a street that remembers the river’s embrace. The boatmen are gone, replaced by the steady hum of modern life. But if you listen closely, as the wind rustles the leaves of the newly planted trees along the widened street, perhaps you’ll hear the faint echo of a boatman’s song, carried on the breeze from a time when Lille’s heart beat in rhythm with the Deûle.
