In 1841, a son named Delphin Petit was born into a well-to-do Lille family. Now, as you stand on Rue Delphin Petit, imagine young Delphin, a man of leisure, pursuing his passions: photography and engraving. Rue Delphin Petit isn’t just a street. It’s a tribute to this local artist. Delphin Petit, as a member of the Société des Sciences, de l’Agriculture et des Arts de Lille (SSAAL), meticulously cataloged over 10,000 art photographs. His collection included his own work, plus pieces from fellow artists. Delphin’s photography was renowned, both nationally and internationally, for its precision in reproducing Renaissance drawings from the Wicar donation. He was also a master at capturing the historical monuments of Lille. Delphin Petit bequeathed his entire estate to the SSAAL upon his death in 1907. This included properties in Lille, land in Fives, and even holdings in Belgium near Bouillon. While the SSAAL had freedom in using the legacy, Delphin wished for them to acquire a building for their meetings, library, and collections. The sale of Delphin’s estate took 20 years, delayed by World War I. The SSAAL ultimately used the funds to establish the Prix Delphin Petit. This prize, first awarded in 1910, honored a painter, sculptor, architect, or engraver for their life’s work. So, as you stroll along Rue Delphin Petit, remember the man who dedicated his life to art. His legacy lives on, not just in this street name, but also in the continued support of the arts.
