Who knew a simple street held such a rich history? Welcome to Rue de Mourmant in Lille. This unassuming street whispers tales of Wazemmes a former independent commune. Before 1858 Wazemmes had its own mayor. Casimir-Edmond Mourmant was that mayor. He was the last one before Wazemmes merged with Lille.

Mourmant wasn’t just a politician. He was a sugar refiner. Imagine him balancing civic duties with the complexities of sugar production. He served as mayor from 1848 to 1858. Afterwards he became a deputy mayor of Lille. His influence extended further. He was also a general councilor from 1852 to 1867.

Mourmant’s legacy extends beyond his political career. In 1849 he established La Prevoyance a mutual aid society. A street in Lille-Sud still bears its name. According to Thiriez many houses from that era were built by the society on land owned by Mourmant himself.

Rue de Mourmant wasn’t always called Rue de Mourmant. It used to be known as Alle de la Marquise. It already ran from Rue Gambetta to Rue de Flandres. Early maps from 1860 depict it as a neglected area. It was a kind of unsanitary swamp.

In 1876 things changed. The street was transformed and widened. It was renamed Rue de Mourmant. His first names were dropped in a republican simplification. The transformation reflects Lille’s growth and modernization. It also shows how a single street can embody the evolution of a city.

Now look around. Can you picture the swampy alleyway? Can you feel the changes wrought by Mourmant’s efforts? Rue de Mourmant isn’t just a street. It’s a living testament to a man a commune and a city’s remarkable past. This quiet corner of Lille holds a surprising amount of smart-aleck knowledge.
