Whispers of industry linger here on Rue de la Filature-Spinnerijstraat. This unassuming street in Saint-Gilles holds a fascinating past. It’s a story of booming industry and unexpected accidents.

Rue de la Filature-Spinnerijstraat its very name speaks volumes. It recalls a time when the area buzzed with the activity of a large linen and hemp mill. The Sociu00e9tu00e9 Anonyme pour la filature des lins et d’u00e9toupes u00e0 la mu00e9canique a significant employer in the area employed nearly 1200 workers. Its presence shaped the neighborhood.

However this industrious past was marked by tragedy. Two boiler explosions in 1870 and 1872 brought the mill’s operations to a halt. The mill closed its doors forever. This wasn’t just the end of a business. It was a blow to the community. Many families lost their livelihoods.

Before the street was even built there was something else here. Between the mill and the Chaussu00e9e de Waterloo stood a unique feature. An old reservoir remained from the city’s second defensive walls. The mill cleverly used this reservoir. They heated and filled it using water from their steam boilers. The reservoir known as the Bassin Snoeck even served as a swimming school. It was accessible via a dead-end street called Vantomme.

Rue de la Filature-Spinnerijstraat itself didn’t appear until 1884. It was built across the former mill property. The reservoir was filled in around 1905. A new swimming pool replaced it elsewhere in the city.

The houses that line Rue de la Filature-Spinnerijstraat today are a testament to a later era. They were constructed between 1887 and 1905. Their eclectic and neoclassical styles represent a new chapter in the neighborhood’s history. Some bear the marks of time. Others show signs of alterations and renovations that occurred in the 20th century.

So as you walk down Rue de la Filature-Spinnerijstraat take a moment to remember its complex history. It’s a street where industry and leisure once coexisted. It’s a street where past tragedies and triumphs are woven into the very fabric of its buildings. It’s a quiet street that continues to whisper tales of a bygone era.
