Navigating Lille’s one-way system, have you ever found yourself on Rue Bayard? Officially, the one-way direction flows from Boulevard de Strasbourg towards Boulevard Victor Hugo. This wasn’t always the case. Rue Bayard’s traffic direction has shifted with the city’s evolution. In 2021, with the influx of new residents into 340 apartments on the street, the flow reversed. Initially, this created quite a bottleneck at the Barthélémy Dorez roundabout near Porte des Postes metro station. Imagine the frustration of residents leaving their homes on Rue Bayard, funneled into the already congested roundabout. Prior to the change, they had multiple exit routes. The residents further up Rue Bayard, near Porte d’Arras metro station, also felt the impact. Previously, drivers from Rue Duguesclin and surrounding streets could bypass the Barthélémy Dorez roundabout using Rue Bayard. This gave them access to both Boulevard Victor Hugo and Rue de Condé. Thankfully, community feedback prompted a reassessment. The section of Rue Bayard between Rue de Condé and Boulevard Victor Hugo is now pedestrianized, creating a calmer environment. A double-sense cycle path was also implemented. So next time you stroll along Rue Bayard, consider its dynamic history of changing directions, reflecting the ever-evolving needs of Lille’s residents.
