Sweeping across the Spree, the Rudolf-Wissell-Brücke stretches out before us, a concrete giant with a story to tell. This isn’t just any bridge. The Rudolf-Wissell-Brücke holds the title of Berlin’s longest single bridge, an impressive 932 meters of Spannbeton, a type of prestressed concrete. It carries a vital artery of Berlin, the A100 Stadtring, and its construction back in 1961 marked a significant moment in the city’s development. The post-war boom in car ownership was choking the city center. The Senate needed a solution. The Rudolf-Wissell-Brücke, then called Nordwestbogenbrücke, was a key part of that solution, designed to sweep traffic around the city, easing the pressure on the old streets. Its construction wasn’t simple. The bridge spans not just the Spree River, but also the Spreeaue floodplain and several railway lines, including the Berlin-Hamburger and Berlin-Lehrter lines. This meant the bridge needed a higher elevation, adding complexity to the project. The builders, Dywidag, employed a technique called free cantilevering with prestressed concrete, a method that allowed them to construct the bridge section by section, pushing outwards from its supporting piers. One of these, Pier 9, stands on 153 concrete piles driven deep into the marshy ground, a testament to the engineering challenges overcome during the construction of the Rudolf-Wissell-Brücke. However, the innovative “Doppelpfeilerscheiben” or double-H shaped piers, proved insufficient just a few years after the bridge opened. They needed reinforcement with vertical tension members to withstand the heavy traffic load. The eastern curved section also needed strengthening. The bridge’s name changed too. It was renamed in honor of Rudolf Wissell, a prominent SPD politician and former Reich Labour Minister. Even with these modifications, the Rudolf-Wissell-Brücke faces ongoing challenges. By 1997, traffic had reached a staggering 120,000 vehicles per day. That number swelled to 220,000 by 2005. Even in 2017, 180,000 vehicles crossed the Rudolf-Wissell-Brücke every day, placing immense strain on its structure. The future holds more change for this vital artery of Berlin. A complete replacement is planned, a complex undertaking estimated to cost 200 million euros. The chosen design involves building a new bridge east of the existing one. This will carry all traffic while the original Rudolf-Wissell-Brücke is carefully deconstructed and a new, stronger structure is built in its place.
