Wasn’t Villa Ephraim once a private home? This impressive building before us is the Rudolf Steiner Schule Hamburg-Nienstedten. It started life in 1952 not as a school but as a grand villa. The Ephraims a wealthy family lived here from 1900 to 1918. James Ephraim a successful merchant built it. His wife Jenny a Klemperer was Jewish. They fled Germany in the late 1930s.

The Rudolf Steiner Schule began modestly. In 1952 130 students from the Wandsbek Rudolf Steiner School moved in. The villa was transformed. In 1958 an addition was built. It included an assembly hall and science labs. The school initially had ties to the Wandsbek school. Younger students learned in Nienstedten. Older students continued in Wandsbek.

The Rudolf Steiner Schule gained independence in 1970. It formed its own association. A new school building was completed in 1975. This building contained classrooms specialist rooms and offices. Expansion continued. In 1984 a new kindergarten was constructed. Then came the upper school building. Finally in 1986 a hall and gymnasium were added.
