Perhaps you are seeking an escape. Maybe you need a break from the city. The Rubbenbruchsee offers that escape. This artificial lake, a jewel on Osnabrück’s western side, is a local favorite. It is more than just water and sand. It is a story of recreation, nature, and human design.

The Rubbenbruchsee spans roughly 24 hectares. It stretches about one kilometer in length. Its width varies. It ranges from 100 to 300 meters. The depth reaches from 2 to 24 meters. The lake’s creation was no accident. Professor Hartmut Peucker planned it. He collaborated with the municipal parks commission. Dredging began in 1968. The final construction stage was completed in 1991.

Geographically, the Rubbenbruchsee acts as a border. It sits between Westerberg and Atter districts. Eversburg borders the recreation area to the northeast. The lake lies in a north-south lowland area. It is within the “Rubbenbruch”. This area is a rift valley. The orogeny formed it. This also produced the hilly Osnabrück area.

The lake’s surroundings are captivating. Woodlands and meadows dominate. They form an urban part of the TERRA.vita Nature Park. To the west lies Atterheide. It is a primarily agricultural area. The Atter airfield is located here. To the east, you will find the Heger Holz and Natruper Holz wooded areas. South of the Rubbenbruchsee, there’s marshland. The Hakenhof Holz, another wooded area, is also nearby.

The Rubbenbruchsee is a haven for leisure. Its idyllic setting attracts tourists. This is especially true in summer. A 3.2 km footpath surrounds the lake. Benches dot the path. This appeals to joggers and cyclists. A parkrun takes place every Saturday morning. Paddleboats are available on the lake’s north side. Here, you will also find restaurants and a miniature golf course. The south side is mostly meadow. The lake’s only island is here. You can also find a kids’ play area and grilling spots.

Equestrian sports are popular here. The Rubbenbruch area hosts several equestrian farms. Riders are often seen near the lake. Bridlepaths have been set up. They ensure riders do not obstruct walkers and cyclists. Fishing is permitted on the western banks of the Rubbenbruchsee. Swimming is prohibited. This is due to nature protection guidelines. The nearby Attersee is available for swimming.
