Broadcasting favorite content to French-speaking Belgians is the core mission here at RTL. But what makes RTL so special? It’s more than just a television station. RTL is a cultural touchstone.
RTL-TVI began its journey as Télé-Luxembourg in 1955. It later transformed into RTL Television in 1982. A significant event shaped its destiny. In 1981, a Belgian military plane collided with the Dudelange transmitter. This incident led to compensation from the Belgian government. It also paved the way for the end of the state monopoly on television broadcasting.
In 1983, the Belgian version of the JTL show emerged. It broadcast from a small studio in Roosevelt villa, Brussels. By 1985, CLT established TVI SA. This Belgian company focused on producing programs. It also sold advertising space specifically for RTL Belgium.
RTL became truly independent on September 12, 1987. RTL-TVI was launched then. It stood for Télévision Indépendante. From that day on, RTL-TVI produced all its programming in Brussels. It was the first independent channel in French-speaking Belgium. The government recognized RTL-TVI on December 21, 1987. This registration allowed it to legally access the Belgian TV advertising market.
For 30 years, RTL Group owned RTL Belgium. But that era ended on March 31, 2022. DPG Media and Groupe Rossel acquired RTL Belgium. In March 2023, RTL Belgium fully embraced its Belgian identity. It ended its Luxembourg status. Consequently, it lost its terrestrial license in Luxembourg. Broadcasts from the Dudelange transmitter ceased on February 29, 2024.
RTL offers a diverse range of channels. These include RTL tvi, RTL club, and RTL plug. Radio Contact and bel RTL provide audio entertainment. RTL play offers on-demand content. RTL info delivers news. RTL sports caters to sports enthusiasts and RTL podcasts provide a variety of listening options.
RTL’s influence extends beyond television and radio. DPG Media Advertising and Rossel Advertising manage advertising space. They represent RTL’s services and numerous third-party clients. RTL remains a cornerstone of media in French-speaking Belgium.
