Gazing upon the unassuming facade of Rozzano, could you ever guess the layers of history embedded within its streets? Rozzano, a city just a short hop from Milan, whispers tales of Napoleonic decrees and royal proclamations. Rozzano wasn’t always the city we see today. It began as a collection of smaller villages: Torriggio, Cassino Scanasio, Pontesesto, and Quinto de’ Stampi. Napoleon himself, in the early 19th century, initiated the unification process. He annexed Torriggio in 1809, followed by the others in 1811. The Austrians, however, had other plans, and in 1816 they reversed Napoleon’s decree. Yet, they later reconsidered, partially reinstating the union in 1841. Finally, in 1870, Vittorio Emanuele II sealed the deal, bringing Pontesesto, and with it Quinto, into the fold, creating the Rozzano we know today. Rozzano’s heart beats within Cascina Grande. This former farmhouse, built in 1881, now houses a vibrant community library, serving both children and adults. Imagine children discovering new worlds amidst the walls of what was once a mill. Adults browse books where stables once stood. Close your eyes and hear the echoes of farm life mingling with the quiet rustle of turning pages. Rozzano boasts a treasure trove of architectural gems. The Visconti Castle in Cassino Scanasio, a hamlet of Rozzano, stands as a testament to the power and influence of the Visconti family. Its rectangular form, complete with four corner towers and an inner courtyard, exudes a sense of timeless grandeur. Cross the ancient masonry bridge and imagine entering through the arch, beneath the watchful gaze of the carved Visconti snake. Rozzano is not just a place of historical significance. It’s a vibrant, modern city. The Fiordaliso Shopping Centre is a marvel of modern engineering. It boasts the world’s largest living wall, a tapestry of over 44,000 plants, attracting a diverse array of insects and birds, a testament to Rozzano’s commitment to urban biodiversity. For those seeking a culinary adventure, Rozzano offers the unique Pot Museum at the AMC Italia headquarters. Here, you can journey through the history of cooking, from Roman times to the present day. Explore a collection of miniature kitchens and step back in time within a reconstructed boilermaker’s workshop. Rozzano is a city of contrasts. It’s where history and modernity intertwine, a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the vibrant pulse of the present.
