Ever wondered where South India’s railway story began? Right here in Royapuram. This locality in northern Chennai is more than just a place. Royapuram is a chapter in India’s history book.

Royapuram’s story stretches back to the Chola period. But its modern name has a few interesting theories. Some say it comes from “Royappa”, a Tamil name for St. Peter. St. Peter’s Church is a key landmark here. Others believe it’s linked to the Rayar kings who once ruled this region. Still others claim it is named after the British / Anglo Indians settled in this locality were called Rayars.

From the 14th century, the Vijayanagara Rulers controlled Royapuram. That was until the Madras land grant to Francis Day. But Royapuram’s destiny truly changed with the railways.

Picture this scene. It is 1856. Royapuram Railway Station is bustling. It is South India’s first railway station. It is also the second railway line in South Asia. The first train chugs off to Arcot. Arcot was the capital of the Carnatic region then. This marked a new era for transportation.

The Madras Chamber of Commerce played a key role. They wanted the station close to their offices and the harbor. George Barclay Bruce oversaw much of the construction. Royapuram became Madras’ main station until the 1870s. Central Station then took over.

Governors and Viceroys once graced this station. Even British Royalty passed through Royapuram. Devadasis once danced here celebrating important events. Today, the station is a shadow of its former self. Yet, it stands as India’s oldest surviving railway station.

But Royapuram offers more than just railway history. St. Peter’s Church is another significant landmark. The boatmen community built it in the late 1820s. They were known as Gurukula Vamsa or Varunakula Mudalis.

Another famous church is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. It started in 1905. It was on premises previously occupied by St Peter’s School.

Take a walk along West Madha Church Road. Here, a fire temple, mosque, and church coexist peacefully. This shows Royapuram’s diverse community spirit.

Royapuram faced challenges too. The harbor’s expansion cut off the area from the sea. Today, you see high walls and oil tanks. These are positioned by the Chennai Container Terminal.

But Royapuram’s spirit endures. It is a reminder of a gracious way of life. Many Anglo Indians around the world seek their roots here. They search for street names and burial records.

So, as you explore Royapuram remember its layers of history. From ancient rulers to railway pioneers, Royapuram has a unique story. It is a story etched in its streets, churches, and the old railway station. Royapuram is not just a locality. It is a living testament to Chennai’s vibrant past.
