Ever wondered how a golf course ended up in the middle of a horse racing track? Let’s dive into the story of Royal Durban Golf Club. This isn’t just any golf club. It’s a piece of Durban’s history.

Royal Durban Golf Club started in 1892. Mr. John Watt, a bank manager, asked the town council to create a golf club. Permission was granted to build a course inside Greyville Racecourse.

The first course was very different from today’s. There were no real greens. Fairways weren’t planted. Oxen cut the grass.

In 1932, the Durban Golf Club was rebuilt. A new clubhouse replaced the old shanty. Bob Grimsdell designed a new course. He had trained as a course architect in London, Paris, and New York. The course became known for its tough rough. This was its main defense, besides the wind. Large trees weren’t allowed so people could see the racetrack.

A proud moment came on April 8, 1932. King George V allowed Durban Golf Club to use the prefix “Royal”. This followed a visit from Edward VIII in 1925. Only four golf clubs in southern Africa have this honor.

The Royal Durban Golf Club then created its club badge. The motto is “Ludus Palma Potior”. It means “the game supersedes the man”.

Royal Durban is unique. It is one of few courses inside a horse racing track. It has hosted major tournaments. These include the South African Championships in 1911. Also, the Commonwealth Tournament in 1975 featured a young Nick Faldo.

In 1985, Gavan Levenson won the SA Open at Royal Durban. Sandy Lyle played with Nick Faldo at the 1975 Commonwealth Tournament here. Lyle won the British Open in 1985 and the Masters in 1988.

Bob Grimsdell designed this links golf course. It has 18 holes and a par of 73. The fairway and greens use Kikuyu grass. It measures 6129m for men and 5529m for ladies.

Royal Durban remains on the land where it started in 1892. It’s the only course inside a horse racing track in mainland Africa. The lack of trees gives it a links-like feel. This is due to the need to see the racetrack.

The club hosted the SA Open. It also held the Commonwealth Tournament of 1975. Nick Faldo played in that tournament when he was eighteen. The par 4 9th hole is the course’s signature.

Royal Durban has a rich history. It has seen many champions. It remains a challenging and interesting course. With artfully created greens Royal Durban resembles a flattish links, though without the run and bounce. Out-of-bounds is a hazard on holes near the race track. A deep ditch runs through the property.

The colonial-era clubhouse dates to the 1930s. It stands near the 18th green. Royal Durban is a blend of elegance and excellent facilities. It offers a friendly atmosphere.

So, next time you’re in Durban, remember Royal Durban Golf Club. It’s more than just a game. It’s a story of history, sport, and a unique location.
