The imposing façade of the Royal College Building looms before us. Its red Dumfriesshire stone gleams in the Scottish sun. This isn’t just any building. This is the heart of Strathclyde University’s John Anderson Campus.

This magnificent structure boasts a rich history. Its story began long before its 1903 completion. In fact its roots trace back to 1796 with Anderson’s Institution. Over a century later in 1887 several institutions merged to form the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. This was the genesis of the Royal College Building.

The need for a larger building became clear. The ever-increasing student population needed more space. The old buildings were simply inadequate. So a grand project commenced. The new building would be the largest single educational complex in Europe.

King Edward VII himself laid the memorial stone in 1903. A truly memorable and imposing spectacle. A time capsule was even buried. It holds glimpses into the past including newspapers and college records. The building was constructed in phases. Each section took years to complete.

The Royal College Building was initially known as the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. Later it was renamed. It became the Royal Technical College in 1912. In 1956 it received its final name: The Royal College of Science and Technology. Today it remains a central part of the University of Strathclyde. It houses various departments. Among them are departments of bioscience chemistry and electronic and electrical engineering. The Technology and Business Studies department is also located here.

After World War II a campus expansion occurred. A new swimming pool was added in 1949. St Paul’s Church was acquired in 1953 to serve as the college chaplaincy. The James Weir Building an engineering block opened. A new student union followed in 1959. Further expansion included a chemistry block. These additions form what’s now known as the Island Site.

The Royal College Building stands as a testament to Glasgow’s educational legacy. It’s a symbol of ambition and progress. Its imposing presence reminds us of the countless students and researchers who passed through its halls. Their contributions have shaped the world we live in. The Royal College Building continues to inspire future generations. It is a true landmark in the heart of Glasgow.
