Opened in 1986 the Royal Alexandra Hospital stands proudly. It serves a vast area. This includes places as far away as Oban and Argyll. The hospital’s story however stretches far beyond its modern building. Its roots lie in a humble dispensary. This dispensary opened in Paisley back in 1786. It later transformed into a house of recovery in 1805.

Imagine a time before the current structure. A new facility financed by William Barbour emerged. Designed by Thomas Graham Abercrombie it was completed in July 1896. This was at Calside. The Royal Alexandra Hospital as we know it today however wasn’t built then. In the early 1980s a decision was made. A modern hospital was needed. It would be built on the site of the old Riccartsbar Hospital. The new Royal Alexandra Hospital was officially opened in May 1988. Princess Alexandra performed the opening ceremony.

The Royal Alexandra Hospital has witnessed significant events. It played a crucial role during the 2007 Glasgow Airport attack. Patients including one of the suspects were treated there. The suspect had suffered severe burns. A tense situation unfolded later. A suspect device was discovered. Parts of the hospital were evacuated as a precaution. A controlled car explosion took place in the hospital’s car park on July 1st. The Royal Alexandra Hospital adapted. It provided care despite the challenges.

The hospital’s services have evolved over time. It boasts 760 staffed beds. A significant change happened in 2003. The maternity wards at Inverclyde Royal Hospital and Vale of Leven Hospital shifted to midwife-led care. The Royal Alexandra Hospital’s maternity unit remains the only consultant-led unit in the upper Clyde area. Sadly the children’s ward closed in February 2018.

Today the Royal Alexandra Hospital continues to serve the community. Its long history speaks to resilience. Its dedication to patient care remains steadfast. From its humble beginnings to its modern facilities. The Royal Alexandra Hospital continues to be a vital part of Paisley and beyond. Its impact on the lives of countless individuals is undeniable. The Royal Alexandra Hospital’s legacy will endure for many years to come.
