Founded in 1645 Roxbury Latin School stands before you a testament to enduring legacy. This venerable institution is the oldest boys’ school in North America a fact often overlooked in the hustle of modern Boston. Imagine John Eliot a Puritan missionary envisioning this very spot as a center for learning. His brother Philip the first schoolmaster taught in a humble one-room schoolhouse.

Roxbury Latin’s early years were a struggle. It relied on annual subscriptions from families not taxes or tuition. This funding model was precarious. The school almost closed during the American Revolution. Its refusal to shut down secured its title as the oldest continuously operating school in North America. Distinguished figures like future Supreme Court Justice William Cushing and Massachusetts Governor Increase Sumner taught here early in their careers. The pay however was often poor resulting in frequent teacher turnover.

The school’s transformation began under Headmaster William Coe Collar. From 1867 to 1907 he quadrupled the student body. He modernized the curriculum adding science modern languages and English to the classical studies of Latin and Greek. He also introduced extracurriculars athletics and student publications. Collar’s innovations made Roxbury Latin a leading college preparatory school. His success however came at a cost. He implemented tuition fees for the first time but even this was insufficient to cover expenses.

In 1927 Roxbury Latin moved to its current location in West Roxbury. This reflected the growing country day school movement which advocated for education outside the city’s distractions. The move changed the school’s demographics. West Roxbury was more affluent than its previous location in Roxbury. Roxbury Latin became more religiously diverse. It enrolled significant numbers of Catholics and Jews. The school admitted its first Black student in 1960.

Today Roxbury Latin continues its tradition of academic excellence. It boasts a low student-teacher ratio and a challenging curriculum. It sends many graduates to Ivy League universities and other prestigious colleges. The school maintains a commitment to financial aid ensuring that students from all backgrounds can attend. Roxbury Latin’s history is rich with stories of resilience innovation and commitment to education. Its legacy continues to shape lives and inspire future generations. The school stands as a beacon of educational achievement a living testament to the vision of John Eliot.
