Is this where the reindeer antlers lead? You might think that’s an odd question. But here in Rovaniemi, it makes perfect sense. You see, Rovaniemi was almost completely destroyed during World War II. The Finnish architect Alvar Aalto was tasked with rebuilding the city. His urban plan, known as the “Reindeer Antler Plan”, used five main roads that fan out from the city center like reindeer antlers. And at the heart of it all, is the Rovaniemi Library. Completed in 1965, it’s a striking example of Aalto’s signature style. The building itself is a beautiful blend of form and function. The exterior is sleek and modern, with clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic. Inside, the library is flooded with natural light. Aalto was a big believer in the power of natural light. He designed the library with large windows and skylights. He even incorporated a “reading well”. This sunken seating area allows readers to be bathed in soft, diffused light while they browse the shelves. You can almost feel the history as you walk through the doors. Aalto’s vision for a modern, functional, and beautiful library lives on.
