A soaring wing a symbol of love and loss. That’s the Rotonda del Ala. Right here before us stands this monument. It’s more than just a roundabout. It’s a memorial. A testament to a tragic love story.

The Rotonda del Ala officially bears the name Plaza Mayor Francisco de Arteaga. It’s a green space in Cordoba Argentina. It honors the development of the Fabrica Argentina de Aviones. This factory played a significant role in the growth of Cordoba’s metalworking industry. The monument at the center emulates an airplane wing rising towards the sky. Hence the popular name Rotonda del Ala.

This wing is a tribute to Myriam Stefford. She was a Swiss actress. Her husband Rafael Baron Biza was a wealthy Argentine writer. Myriam had a passion for aviation. She tragically died in a plane crash in 1931. She was attempting a daring flight across Argentina. Her instructor Ludwig Fuchs also perished.

Baron Biza was devastated. He built the Rotonda del Ala as a mausoleum for his beloved wife. The construction took place between 1935 and 1936. It was a grand gesture. It involved many workers. The 85-meter-tall structure dwarfs the Obelisco in Buenos Aires.

Myriam’s remains are in a crypt six meters underground. Legend claims her jewels are hidden beneath the monument. A 45-carat diamond called the Southern Cross is rumored to be among them. Her tomb is protected. A warning reads ‘Cursed be he who desecrates this tomb’.

The Rotonda del Ala is more than just a monument to Myriam Stefford’s tragic end. It tells a story of love loss ambition and mystery. It’s a unique landmark in Cordoba. It invites contemplation on life death and the enduring power of love. It’s a place that stirs the imagination. It whispers secrets to those who listen carefully. It leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.
