Seven and a half kilometers long. That’s the Roter Graben. A man-made ditch. A significant part of Freiberg’s history. Right here before you lies a testament to ingenuity and hard work.
The Roter Graben is more than just a ditch. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This waterway originally channeled water from the Mittlere Ratsmühle in Halsbach. It even extended to the Churprinz mine in Großschirma. Built in 1614-15 its purpose was vital to the region’s mining operations.
Imagine the scene. The year is 1615. The Roter Graben is newly completed. Water rushes through its channels. It feeds the water wheels. These wheels power the machinery of mines along Halsbrücker Spat. The water also supplies the Halsbrücke smelter. A bustling hub of activity depended on this carefully engineered waterway.
At its peak in the late 19th century the Roter Graben carried between 800 and 1000 liters of water per second. A substantial flow. Its original dimensions were impressive. It was almost four square meters in cross-section. It had a width of 2.7 meters and a depth of up to 1.4 meters.
Today the Roter Graben is heavily silted. It’s much shallower. Some sections are even gone. Near Halsbrücke it has partially disappeared. However the path alongside the Roter Graben follows the old Bergmannsweg. This makes it a popular hiking trail.
The Roter Graben is not just a historical landmark. It’s also a cause for concern. The ferrous mud within poses environmental risks. This mud contains heavy metals. Leakage poses a threat to groundwater. If the Freiberger Mulde floods the sediments could be mobilized. Retaining walls could collapse. This could severely damage the riverbanks.
But the story doesn’t end there. Scientists are working on solutions. Projects like ZAUBER aim to find new uses for the iron-rich mud. Transforming waste into valuable resources. This research is part of a larger effort to create resource-oriented environmental technologies. A project to turn a problem into an opportunity. A chapter of the Roter Graben story is still being written.
