It is more than a library, it is the heart of Roskilde’s intellectual life. Roskilde Bibliotek, standing proudly on Dronning Margrethes Vej, has been a beacon of knowledge and a hub for the community for over a century. It was founded in 1901, in a small apartment. It was a simple beginning, with just 1,200 books. Back then, only men could sit in the reading room, women had to take their books home. The library moved several times in the first decades, always searching for a larger space. Finally, it found its home in 1961, in a beautiful building on the grounds of a former monastery. Today, it houses over 500,000 items, from books to movies to music. Roskilde Bibliotek also offers a range of services, including computer access, internet access, and workshops. The library is a meeting place for people of all ages. Children can participate in story time and arts and crafts, while adults can enjoy lectures and author events. Roskilde Bibliotek is a place for everyone to learn, to grow, and to be inspired.
