Wondered why this seemingly quiet place is called Rosengård? Rosengårds Herrgård stands before us. It was once the heart of a vast agricultural estate. Today only the main building remains. Let me tell you its story.

The name Rosengård appeared in an 1811 purchase agreement. Svedin Karlström bought several properties. He named it all Rosengård. Karlström became the largest landowner in Västra Skrävlige. Between 1812 and 1817 Karlström built the main building. The builder Anders Lundberg constructed a stone building with ten rooms and a kitchen. Two barns and two residential wings were also added.

In 1819 Karlström and his family moved into Rosengårds Herrgård. The estate employed many people. Six maids a farmhand a garden hand ten farmhands and two cottagers lived on the property with their families. After Karlström’s death in 1834 his widow sold Rosengård. Her son-in-law Möller then took over. Möller sold half the estate to his business partner. Both failed to manage Rosengård successfully.

An auction was held in 1848. Peter Kockum bought both parts for 49916 riksdaler. Peter Kockum was the son of Johan Daniel Kockum. Johan was an estate owner at Bulltofta. Peter was known as a knowledgeable and efficient farmer. He expanded his skills through foreign trips. He also visited agricultural and livestock exhibitions. Under Peter Kockum Rosengård became a model farm known throughout Skåne.

Peter married Hilda Cecilia Bergh in 1851. They moved into Rosengårds Herrgård. Hilda was the daughter of Christian Bergh. Christian owned the Kronetorp estate in Burlöv. Rosengård also operated a distillery. They had special permission to produce spirits in November and December. Annual production reached almost 63000 liters.

In 1870 Peter Kockum modernized the main building. The current appearance dates from this time. The work was carried out by builder Christian Mortensen. The Kockum family had connections with several estates. These included Bulltofta Kronetorp Bellevue and Lindholmen.

When Peter Kockum died in 1891 Rosengård was valued at 350000 kr. His widow Hilda Kockum continued to run the estate with the help of a manager. When she died in 1906 Rosengård was inherited by her three children. In 1907 the siblings sold 75 hectares to the city of Malmö for 300000 kr. The sisters Ida and Hilda Kockum continued to manage the remaining part of the farm. Besides grain sugar beets were important sources of income. They also sold manure wine milk and spirits.

When Ida Kockum died in 1939 Hilda Kockum became the sole owner of Rosengård. She continued to run the farm for two more decades. She died in 1959 at the age of 97.

In 1959 Malmö purchased Rosengårds Herrgård. Farmland gave way to the Rosengård residential area in the 1960s. Today Rosengårds Herrgård serves as a youth center. It is known as Drömmarnas hus. It is a testament to a rich agricultural past.
