Did the Harsha family know they were making history when they moved into their Rosedale Gardens home in January 1926? They were the first residents of this planned community, a vision brought to life by the Shelden Land Company. Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church, a cornerstone of this neighborhood, followed soon after, its doors opening in 1928. The community blossomed quickly. Sixty-one homes were built that very first year, with families eager to embrace the suburban ideal Rosedale Gardens offered. Imagine the excitement as the Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church became a hub of activity, a place where neighbors could connect and build a sense of community. By 1929, 121 homes dotted the landscape, and alongside them stood a small grocery store and the Rosedale Gardens School, all signs of a thriving, growing community. The Great Depression momentarily stalled this progress, but the developers persevered, bricking over existing wood-framed homes and continuing with brick construction as the economy slowly recovered. The church, a steadfast presence throughout, offered solace and support during these challenging times. The years between 1935 and the onset of World War II saw another surge in construction. Close to 250 more homes were built in Rosedale Gardens, further establishing the neighborhood’s character. The war again slowed progress, with only seven houses built between 1942 and 1945. But the postwar boom brought renewed energy, and by 1948, the original section of Rosedale Gardens boasted 428 homes. Through the decades, Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church has remained a vital thread in the fabric of this community, witnessing its growth, weathering its storms, and celebrating its joys. It stands as a testament to the vision of the Sheldens and the enduring spirit of its residents.
