Eighty years of whispers and hymns have echoed within these walls of the Rosebank Catholic Church. Do you feel the weight of them? Here, at 16 Keyes Avenue in Johannesburg, the Rosebank Catholic Church stands as a testament to faith and community. It’s dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a concept celebrated each year on December 8th. This isn’t about the conception of Jesus, or the virgin birth. The Immaculate Conception celebrates Mary’s conception without original sin. Pope Pius IX declared that Mary was, from the very first moment of her existence, preserved from the stain of original sin, by a singular grace from God. The Rosebank Catholic Church isn’t just a building, it’s a living entity. A diverse congregation of at least 1400 Catholic families calls this parish home. They are led by a priest and two deacons. One such deacon, Brent Chalmers, has a remarkable story. A former army colonel and PGA commissioner, Chalmers felt a call to the church nine years ago. A confession with a visiting priest, Father Michael Fish, changed his life. Father Fish’s simple embrace and words, “God loves you,” set Chalmers on a new path. Now, Chalmers not only assists at Rosebank Catholic Church, but also heads the Soul Provider Trust. This organization feeds 7500 destitute people daily, thanks to partnerships with businesses like PnP, Woolworths, and various hotels. There’s a palpable sense of sanctity within these walls of Rosebank Catholic Church. A quiet hum that some say is unique to Catholic churches. Even those unfamiliar with the faith might feel it. Perhaps it’s the history, the devotion of the congregation, or maybe, just maybe, it’s something more. Deacon Chalmers speaks of two red stains that have appeared on the marble altar over the years, emanating from the hands of the crucified Christ. A phenomenon not present in older photos of the church. Whether you believe in miracles or not, the Rosebank Catholic Church offers a space for reflection, community, and a glimpse into the rich tapestry of faith in Johannesburg.
