Rose Park gets its name from this very park. It sits at the intersection of 8th Street and Orizaba Avenue. The Alamitos Land Company gifted this land to the city back in 1910.
The Rose Park neighborhood started taking shape in 1905. Subdivisions popped up until 1921. Many homes built during this time are charming Craftsman Bungalows. You will also see Prairie and Mission Revival styles from the 1920s. Ranch style and Neo-Traditional houses appeared in the 1930s and 1940s.
Rose Park is one of Long Beach’s largest historic neighborhoods. In 2002, it was officially declared a historic district. Rose Park South, located below 7th Street, followed suit.
This area has a rich history. It was once home to British and Scandinavian immigrants. They worked in the oil fields and shipyards.
Look around at the heart of Rose Park. Notice the gazebo. A new one stands where an older one once did. Palm trees offer shade. But there are more palm trees than roses these days.
Rose Park is known for its friendly, small-town feel. It’s a place where locals gather. They have picnics or yoga classes in the park. Sometimes impromptu concerts happen on porches during summer nights.
Rose Park is next to Retro Row. This is a three-block commercial strip. It has pubs, shops, and a restored 1920s Art Deco movie house.
Keep an eye out for the Long Beach parrots. They often visit Rose Park. They munch on tree fruits and chirp throughout the afternoon.
The Rose Park Neighborhood Association actively plans community events. It also maintains the historical properties. These properties make the area unique.
Rose Park is a walkable neighborhood. You can easily stroll to nearby areas. These include Bluff Park, Carroll Park, and Belmont Heights. The beach is also a short walk away.
You will find the Skinny House on Gladys Avenue. It is a unique sight. It is a three-story home. But it’s no wider than 10 feet.
Newton P. Rummonds built it in 1932. He took a bet. He built on a tiny plot of land.
