Over twenty thousand souls rest here at Rose Hill Cemetery. It’s a peaceful place, but it holds a century of stories. Rose Hill Cemetery opened its gates in 1889. It quickly became a final resting place for many. The cemetery sprawls across more than eleven acres. Within its grounds stands a Victorian chapel, a silent witness to countless funerals. Rose Hill Cemetery is no longer accepting new burials. Its gates are closed to the newly departed, but open to those who wish to remember. Rose Hill Cemetery holds the weight of two world wars within its grounds. There are 28 Commonwealth graves from the First World War and 58 from the Second. Scattered among the ordinary citizens lie those who fought for their country. One notable grave belongs to Edward Brooks. He received the Victoria Cross for his bravery in the First World War. Brooks single-handedly charged an enemy machine gun nest. He killed two gunners, forcing the rest to flee. He then captured the gun, preventing further Allied casualties. His final resting place is here, at Rose Hill Cemetery. His story is just one of the many etched into the stones of this quiet place.
