A delicate fragrance hung in the air at the Rose Garden. It hinted at a story waiting to unfold. The Rose Garden, once a vibrant jewel of Salt Lake City, held a rich past. Let’s journey back to May 25, 1937. The Rose Garden was born from a partnership. The Utah Rose Society, the Exchange Club, Salt Lake City Parks, and Holy Cross Hospital all joined forces. Initially, the Rose Garden boasted 600 rose bushes across two acres. It blossomed over time. It eventually expanded to hold over 7,000 bushes, representing 400 varieties from across the globe, spread over 3.5 acres. Some rose beds served as memorials, honoring the memory of loved ones. A wrought iron fence, adorned with climbing roses, embraced the Rose Garden. Some parts of this fence still stand along South Temple. Trellises, benches, and winding paths invited visitors to explore. A sundial marked the passage of time. The Rose Garden became a beloved attraction. It drew up to 500 visitors daily. The annual opening day in June saw even larger crowds. A unique tradition marked the garden’s history: the “rose rent.” Every June, the Utah Rose Society presented a dozen roses to Holy Cross Hospital. This was their payment for the use of the land. This charming ritual continued until June 4, 1972. The hospital’s expansion demanded space. A parking lot and Moreau Hall for the nursing school were needed. The Rose Garden had to make way. In the spring of 1973, the Rose Garden found a new home in Sugar House Park. About 2,000 of the hardiest roses were transplanted. Sadly, this new garden fell into disrepair. By 2016, weeds had overtaken the rose beds. Only a few original roses survived. The once-grand Rose Garden was replaced by a food garden in 2020. Yet, the spirit of the original Rose Garden lives on. A smaller version was revived at Holy Cross Hospital in 1990. Though the original Rose Garden is gone, its story continues to bloom in the hearts of those who remember its beauty.
