Samuel Polyne a French-Canadian was the first white settler in Romulus. He arrived in 1826. He didn’t stay long though. He left after the township was organized in 1835. Romulus wasn’t always Romulus. Its name was changed to Wayne in 1845. Then it changed back to Romulus in 1848. The city of Romulus finally incorporated in 1970. This wasn’t just any settlement. Romulus has a rich history. It played a part in the Underground Railroad. The Samuel Kingsley Home is a key landmark. Samuel Kingsley hid slaves in his underground cellar. This house is now across from the Romulus Historical Museum. Another Underground Railroad stop was the White Church. It’s now called 5 Points Church. Sadly Romulus has also seen tragedy. The Northwest Airlines Flight 255 disaster happened at Detroit Metro Airport. The plane crashed in 1987. It killed almost everyone on board. A memorial marks the crash site. Another incident occurred in 2009. A bomb attempt was made on a Northwest Airlines flight. The would-be bomber was caught. Romulus is near Detroit and the airport. It’s part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The city is also close to many universities. These include Madonna University and the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Romulus is known as a close-knit community. It’s a city with small-town charm. It also offers big-city amenities. The city has parks including Mary Ann Banks Park. There’s also an athletic center with a pool. Romulus is home to the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. This airport is a major hub for Delta Air Lines. The city is also home to many businesses. These include the Romulus Engine plant and an Amazon fulfillment center. Romulus has overcome challenges. City parks were closed in 2011 due to financial issues. They reopened in 2015.
