How can a place of suffering transform into a sanctuary of peace? Rommaninat Park stands before us. It is a testament to transformation.

Rommaninat Park offers a green space. It invites reflection in the heart of Bangkok. But this park was not always a haven. Its story is etched in the very grounds beneath our feet.

Once, this land held Klong Prem Prison. King Chulalongkorn, Rama V, initiated its construction in 1890. It was modeled after HM Prison Brixton in London. Over time, the prison changed names. In 1972, it became Bangkok Remand Prison.

Klong Prem Central Prison was established in 1944. It housed Thailand’s worst offenders. This included prisoners awaiting execution. By 1960, the prison became overcrowded. It relocated to the north of the city. The Maha Chai Road facility became the Bangkok Remand Centre.

In 1992, most of the prison buildings were demolished. Rommaninat Park was created. Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, later King Maha Vajiralongkorn, opened the park in 1999.

Today, Rommaninat Park spans 45000 square metres. It is located between Siriphong and Maha Chai Roads. The park sits in Samran Rat Subdistrict. It is near Wat Suthat and Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre.

As we wander through Rommaninat Park, notice the remnants of its past. Two observation towers stand as silent witnesses. A section of the old prison walls remains. The adjacent Corrections Museum tells the full story.

Rommaninat Park offers recreational facilities. A children’s playground echoes with laughter. A ball court invites friendly competition. A running track encircles the park. Fitness equipment offers a chance for exercise. A free weights gym is available.

The park is open daily from 05:00 to 21:00. Admission is free. Rommaninat Park also serves as a terminal for BMTA’s bus line 42. Sam Yot MRT station provides easy access.

Rommaninat Park is more than just a park. It is a symbol of renewal. It is a reminder that even from the darkest of places, beauty and peace can emerge. The park preserves the memory of what once stood here. It provides a space for recreation. It offers a place for reflection in Bangkok.
