Did Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal, the man immortalized atop the Römer Obelisk, ever imagine his likeness would watch over Erfurt for centuries? This striking 18-meter obelisk dominates the Domplatz, a testament to Erthal’s influence on Erfurt. The Römer Obelisk, a towering monument of Wandersleben sandstone, isn’t just a tribute to a man; it’s a window into Erfurt’s past. Erected in 1777, the Römer Obelisk commemorates Erthal’s first visit to the city as its new ruler, the Archbishop of Mainz. The citizens of Erfurt, grateful for his educational and social reforms, contributed a significant portion of the 1120 talers needed for its construction. The obelisk’s granite base features Erthal’s portrait, wreathed in laurel, along with his name, coat of arms, and various honors. Originally, an inscription praised Erthal as the “best father of the land.” This inscription, intended as an “eternal memory,” has unfortunately faded over time due to weathering and multiple restorations. Though barely visible now, modern technology has revealed its words, echoing the sentiments of the grateful citizens of Erfurt. The inscription proclaims Erthal as Archbishop of Mainz, Arch-Chancellor and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, and Prince-Bishop of Worms. It also notes his birthdate, January 3, 1719, his election date, July 18, 1774, and the date he graced Erfurt with his presence, May 17, 1777. The Römer Obelisk, having witnessed centuries of Erfurt’s history, continues to stand tall, a remarkable reminder of a leader’s legacy and a city’s gratitude.
