A sprawling green expanse unfolds before you. This is Rombergpark a botanical garden unlike any other. It’s one of the largest in the world a true Dortmund treasure.
Rombergpark’s history stretches back to 1822. The Romberg family created an English landscape park around their castle. Imagine elegant pathways winding through meticulously planned gardens. A grand vision designed by Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe a court gardener from Düsseldorf. He crafted a picturesque scene complete with a lake an island and a bridge. Jakob Greiß a leading gardener who later directed Cologne’s municipal gardens oversaw the planting.
The original castle was sadly destroyed during World War II. But Rombergpark survived. The city of Dortmund acquired the park in 1926. They moved their botanical garden here expanding its scope significantly. The park suffered damage during wartime bombings. But it holds a darker secret. In 1945 near the war’s end Gestapo officers murdered almost 300 people here and in nearby woods. The Mahnmal Bittermark and a memorial plaque with white roses commemorate these victims.
After the war director Gerd Krössmann revitalized Rombergpark. He established it as an arboretum with about 4500 plant species. He built four greenhouses in 1958 creating a haven for cacti succulents ferns and tropical plants.
Today Rombergpark is a vibrant place. You can stroll beneath the shade of a linden alley planted in 1888. Admire the park’s remarkable trees some of the largest in North Rhine-Westphalia. Explore themed gardens like the clematis garden or the heath and moor landscape. Watch birds fish and turtles in the park’s lakes fed by iron-rich creeks. Marvel at the greenhouses and the blooming rhododendrons an annual spectacle. The café in the greenhouses provides a relaxing respite.
