A symphony of colours greets you. Welcome to Roma Street Parklands.

This isn’t just any park. It’s the world’s largest subtropical garden in a city centre. Eleven hectares of vibrant beauty. Imagine a place transformed. Once a bustling railway goods yard. Now a tranquil oasis.

For thousands of years Indigenous people held meetings and ceremonies here. The land remembers. The railway arrived in 1875. It connected Brisbane to Ipswich and Toowoomba. The terminal grew. It became a major goods yard. Between 1911 and 1934 massive redevelopment occurred. 554300 cubic metres of earth were moved. A steep terrain was permanently altered. The present-day escarpment was created. It marked the boundary of the former Albert Park.

During World War II this place was vital. It transported war materials and military personnel. The station was redeveloped. It served a metropolitan and long-distance train network. Eventually it moved to Acacia Ridge in 1991. The goods yard’s days were over.

In 1995 Premier Wayne Goss announced a change. The railway goods yard would be redeveloped. It would become parkland. Construction started in 2000. The park opened in 2001. A landscape architecture consortium designed it. They created a web of pathways and boardwalks. They wove them through cascading waterways and rocky outcrops. Sixteen local artists added their work.

The park even won awards. Before it even opened it won a commendation for its innovative concrete finishes. Coloured concrete and rough cast concrete create changing effects throughout the day. Sunlight and shadows play across the walls.

A statue of Gandhi stands in the park. The Indian community commissioned it. Narendra Modi unveiled it during the G20 in 2014.

The open-air amphitheatre is a central feature. It was once part of Albert Park. It hosts plays concerts and even the Moonlight Cinema. The Queensland Theatre Company and the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble perform here. Many Shakespeare plays have been staged here. Even a Johann Strauss concert “Strauss Beneath the Stars” was held in October 1983. The Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols and Brisbane’s Carols by Candlelight were once held here.

Roma Street Parklands is a living testament to transformation. It’s a place where history meets nature. A place where art and nature blend. Come wander and discover the wonders within. It’s a true urban oasis. A place to lose yourself and find yourself again. Enjoy the beauty of Roma Street Parklands.
