Is it true that hidden beneath this tranquil landscape of Rolling Hills lies a mansion with more secrets than stories? Today, we’re exploring the surprising depths of Rolling Hills, California. This isn’t just another affluent suburb. It is a place where architectural wonders and geological drama intertwine.

Rolling Hills is known for its sprawling estates. But one home, in particular, stands out: Hacienda de la Paz. This isn’t your typical single-story California mansion. It extends five stories underground.

Imagine the surprise of excavating down to bedrock and unearthing fossil fragments of whales and dolphins. That’s exactly what happened during the construction of Hacienda de la Paz in Rolling Hills. The owner, John Z. Blazevich, turned this challenge into an opportunity. He created a unique subterranean world.

Hacienda de la Paz in Rolling Hills is a 50,000-square-foot marvel. It boasts nine bedrooms and 25 bathrooms. But the real surprises lie beneath the surface.

A Moroccan-style Turkish bath awaits. It offers a luxurious retreat. There is even an underground tennis court. It doubles as a ballroom for grand events.

The attention to detail at Hacienda de la Paz is astonishing. Interlocking wood ceilings were built in Spain. Artisans hand-fitted them together. A women’s powder room features a confessional window between the stalls. It allows for private conversations.

Rafael Manzano Martos, a curator for King Juan Carlos of Spain, designed the home. This makes it his only design in the Americas. The driveway is lined with 70-year-old carob trees. A limestone motor court was hand-set by artisans from Portugal.

But the beauty of Rolling Hills isn’t limited to architecture. In July 2023, the city faced a different kind of drama. A landslide destroyed a cluster of homes. Twelve homes on Peartree Lane were red-tagged. Residents had only minutes to evacuate.

Ten of those homes slid into a canyon. The cause remains uncertain. However, heavy winter rains are a likely factor. Despite the destruction, the community rallied.

Rolling Hills Estates City Council proclaimed a local emergency. This allowed the city to seek funds from state and federal agencies. The county assessor expedited property tax waivers for affected residents.

Rolling Hills offers stunning views of the Los Angeles basin and Santa Monica Bay. The owner of Hacienda de la Paz chose the site for its grandeur. He said that the Palos Verdes Peninsula has life and isn’t congested.

As we conclude our tour of Rolling Hills, it’s clear that this place is more than just rolling hills. It’s a blend of architectural ambition and natural forces. From opulent mansions to geological events, Rolling Hills offers surprises at every turn. It is a place where the extraordinary is simply part of the landscape.
